Racism and White Privilege

In the film, the white women socialite group which had the racist attitudes towards black maids suggested installing separate bathroom for the help because the group leader Hilly thought that black people carried different disease that white people could catch. Hilly wanted to make a law requiring white people to build outside the bathroom for black employees. This idea is not only discrimination but severe mental abuse.
During a terrible storm, Minny got fired because she used the guest’s bathroom instead of going outside to the help’s toilet. Moreover, Minny’s employer also claimed that Minny was a thief and the result was that no one would hire her later.

Charlotte, Skeeter’s mother, fired Constantine who worked for the family for 29 years, just because Constantine’s daughter Rachel disobeyed Charlotte’s order of entering through the kitchen during lunch when Charlotte was with the local chapter of the Daughters of America.

The black people realized the lousy situation and fought for their rights. The civil rights movement took place in the United States, and it had a significant effect on changing racial discrimination during these years. Now, we can see American black president Obama on the political stage and lots of extraordinary black people in different fields of American society. The struggle of black people for equal rights is continuing. We can often see news and lots of articles on this issue. I think there is a long way to go for actual equal rights.
